How qualified is the person?

The first question you should think about before hiring is “How qualified is this person?” That’s qualified in terms of:

1. Principles

Look at your own perspective – what kind of person would you like to work and spend many hours with? You can draw up a simple checklist of the characteristics of such a person.

2. Most start-ups need people who are progressive, creative and curious

Define the characteristics that are important to you, and work out ways you can discover whether a candidate has those qualities, at some point in the interview and hiring process.

3. Great people learn fast

My finest AdWords marketing manager had never created a single AdWords campaign before he started at my company. He learned very quickly, and did such a fantastic job at everything he tackled that today he’s the second biggest shareholder of the company!
